ALP Return to School Policy for COVID-19 Symptoms or Exposure

Symptoms of possible covid-19 in children per CDC (but can also be due to non-covid viruses):  fever, headache, congestion, runny nose, sore throat, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, loss of taste or smell, cough, muscle aches, fatigue, nausea/vomiting, and/or diarrhea.

Isolation/Quarantine Guidelines When Symptomatic

Note that ALP may give directions on where a student can be tested, but testing cannot be required.

Symptoms AND NO KNOWN CLOSE CONTACT of someone with covid-19, the student may return to school when:

  • If Student does not take test OR has a positive test:
    • 10 days have passed since the first symptoms started AND
    • 24 hours fever-free without fever-reducing meds AND
    • Improvement in other symptoms 

(Of note: in rare situations, need 20 days from the start of symptoms if illness severe/critical or patient is severely immunocompromised)

  • If Student has Negative test: may return to school when: 
  • 24 hours fever-free without fever-reducing meds (including chills, shakes, and body/muscle aches) AND
  • Improvement in other symptoms 
      • If symptoms still present, doctor’s note may be required
  • Symptoms AND close contact of someone with covid-19 (regardless of test result) may return to school when:
  • At least 10 days have passed since the first symptoms started
  • At least 24 hours have passed since fever resolved (without the use of fever-reducing medications) and
  • Improvement in other symptoms 
  • Exceptions: Person with symptoms has had covid-19 in the past 90 days or is fully vaccinated, then they can return sooner if they have a negative test result (once fever resolved for at least 24 hours and there is improvement in symptoms)

Isolation/Quarantine Guidelines When Exposed but NO Symptoms:

  • No test or positive test: subject to isolation as above for positive test (i.e., quarantine for at least 10 full days since known exposure)
  • Negative test but fully vaccinated or have had covid-19 in past 90 days: no quarantine necessary
  • Negative test in first 5 days but no prior vaccination or covid-19 illness: quarantine for at least 10 full days since known exposure
  • Can return to school 7 days after exposure if remain without symptoms AND have a negative test AT LEAST 5 FULL days after exposure
